DQMatters and Conformed Dimensions of Data Quality

In 2013, Dan Myers (Principal of DQMatters.com) published a series of articles in the online publication Information-Management.com, titled "The Value of Using the Dimensions of Data Quality". This was a series of five articles discussing how much agreement there is among six authors/organizations regarding the definitions of each of the dimensions of data quality. He then presented those ideas at Enterprise Data World- Washington DC, on 3/30/2015 where it was well received.

Dan Myers founded DQMatters.com (Data Quality Matters) in February 2016 and created the associated DQMatters.com website for his consultancy and eLearning company focused on teaching data quality. He also built the initial Conformed Dimensions of Data Quality website (dimensionsofdataquality.com).

In 2024, in order to simplify the ongoing maintenance of the standard in one location (website), and help people navigate their DQ journey, the DQMatters (site dedicated to educating people about the CDDQ) and the Dimensions of Data Quality (standard) sites were merged. Dimensionsofdataquality.com now points to the DQMatters.com site where all of the resources are still available and linked to additional educational materials provided by DQMatters.

History of the Conformed Dimensions of Data Quality

The Conformed Dimensions Journey:

  • 2013, After recognizing an opportunity to normalize various author's lists of the dimensions of data quality, Dan compared six major DQ authors' works in a series of articles on Information-Management.com. These articles walk you through the proof for a set of Conformed Dimensions that include the best of each author's work, but adhere to the least common denominator at the same time.
  • 2015, In order to refine this set of Conformed Dimensions through review by a broader audience, Dan started the Dimensions of Data Quality survey. Additional language and a few nuances were identified (primarily now included in the non-standard vocabulary).
  • 2016, In order to provide the Conformed Dimensions, on-demand, to a broader audience, he registered "DimensionsOfDataQuality.com" and posted the Conformed Dimensions for others to use. Additionally, he repeated the Dimensions of Data Quality survey in order to validate the 2015 findings and further understand how organizations use the dimensions of data quality.
  • 2017, The third year that the Dimensions of Data Quality survey was conducted revealed a number of nascent industries and ongoing changes in popularity of the different dimensions.
  • The Dimensions of Data Quality survey was again conducted in 2019, 2021 and 2024.
  • 2024, The DQMatters (site dedicated to educating people about the CDDQ) and the Dimensions of Data Quality (standard) sites were merged for ease of maintenance.
